4. Data refers to 1802 in-house R&D units of Private Sector Industries which include 248 SIRO units, projected data for 63 in-house R&D units and 529 industries of Central Monitoring of Indian Economy (CMIE) database;
5. Data for the year 2003-04 and 2004-05 has been estimated by applying the rate of growth for the period 1998-99 to 2002-03 sector-wise;

Higher Education Sector incudes data from 106 universities and 27 PG colleges doing R&D but excludes R&D expenditure of 38 State Agricultural Universities and extramural project funding of central funding agencies. Data for the year 1998-99 onwards has been estimated by applying the rate of growth for the previous 3 years on the expenditure in Higher Education Sector;
